Total
Total is an international energy group whose mission is to sustainably cater for the growing global demand for energy, through innovation and industry.
Born out of successive mergers between Total and Petrofina, followed by Elf Aquitaine, the new group – re-christened Total in May 2003 – is the proud heir to a prestigious past in oil and gas, dating all the way back to the 1920s.
Total is now present in more than 130 countries and employs 96,400 people. Together with its subsidiaries and associated companies, it forms the fourth-largest oil company in the world.
Total is active in every segment of the oil industry, from the beginning (exploration, development and production of petrol and natural gas) to the end (refining, distribution, trading and transport of crude oil, together with other oil products). Total is also a major player in the world of chemistry, with a strong involvement in both coal-mining and electricity production.
The association between Citroen and Total dates right back to 1968, when Total developed a specific lubricant for the iconic DS, designed to eliminate problems with ignition and waste build-up. Today, the partnership that unites the two companies ranges across the board and is truly global. It takes in technology, business and training, as well as motorsport.
From the 1969 Rally of Morocco to the recent haul of WRC titles, the record of achievement that Citroen and Total has racked up together is very impressive. The extreme conditions that are often found in motorsport form the perfect test bed for everything that comes out of Total’s research centre in Solaize, near Lyon.
For Total, motorsport is simply the ultimate development tool for products to be well and truly put through their paces under the most challenging circumstances possible.
